In a green forest, there lived a small bird named Nola. Nola had soft yellow feathers and bright eyes. She loved music. Every morning, she listened to the other birds in the trees.
The blackbird sang a deep song. The robin sang a sweet song. The little sparrows sang together, and the whole forest sounded happy. Nola wanted to sing too, but when she opened her beak, only a small sound came out.
“Peep,” she said.
Then she stopped. Her face felt hot. “My is too small,” she whispered.
Nola flew to a quiet and watched the others. She wished she could sing loudly and beautifully. She wished the forest could hear her. But she was afraid the other birds would .
One day, a squirrel named Pip climbed up the tree. He carried a nut in his tiny hands. “Why do you look sad?” he asked.
“I want to sing,” Nola said, “but my voice is small.”
Pip sat beside her. “Small is not bad,” he said. “A small sound can still be a song.”
Nola was not sure. “But the others are better.”
“They every day,” Pip said. “Maybe you can practice too.”
The next morning, Nola woke up early. The forest was still quiet. She stood on a branch and tried again.
“Peep, peep.”
It was not loud, but it was . She tried a third time. Then a fourth time. Every day, she practiced before the forest became busy. Sometimes her voice shook. Sometimes she forgot the . But she did not stop.
After one week, the robin heard her. Nola became very still.
“That is a lovely little song,” the robin said.
“Really?” Nola asked.
“Yes,” said the robin. “It is . It sounds like .”
Nola felt for the first time. She practiced with the robin. The robin did not laugh. She showed Nola how to breathe slowly and listen to the tune before singing it.
Soon, other animals noticed Nola’s song. A rabbit stopped near the tree. A deer lifted its head. Even the old owl opened one eye and smiled.
One evening, the forest animals near the big oak tree. The blackbird sang first. Then the sparrows sang together. Finally, the robin said, “Nola has a song for us too.”
Nola’s heart beat fast. She looked at Pip in the grass. He nodded.
Nola opened her beak and sang. Her song was not the loudest song in the forest. It was soft and clear. It moved gently through the leaves. The animals listened quietly.
When she finished, nobody laughed. Everyone clapped, hopped, or waved their tails.
Nola smiled. “My song is small,” she said.
Pip smiled back. “Yes. And it is yours.”
From that day, Nola sang every morning. She still listened to the other birds, but she no longer hid on the quiet branch. She had learned that does not always begin with a loud voice. Sometimes it begins with one small sound and a friend who says, “Try again.”
