Tom passes the little shop with big windows every day. The shop is between a flower store and a bus stop. In the , there are cups, notebooks, candles, and small toys. Tom likes to look, but he usually does not go inside.
On Monday, Tom remembers that his is on Friday. He wants to buy a small . He , so the gift must be simple. After school, he stops in front of the window and looks carefully.
A blue notebook . His friend Max likes drawing maps and houses, so a notebook may be useful. Next to it, Tom sees a green cup with stars. It is nice, but Max already has many cups.
Tom goes inside the shop. A woman at the says hello. The shop is quiet, and soft music plays near the back wall. Tom feels a little shy, but he asks, "How much is the blue notebook?"
The woman says the notebook is five dollars. Tom has six dollars in his pocket. He also sees a small pencil with a yellow moon on it. The pencil one dollar. Now he can buy both things.
The woman puts the notebook and pencil in a . Tom asks for a small card too. He writes, "Happy birthday, Max. Draw a new world." The words are simple, but Tom thinks Max will like them.
On Friday, Max opens the gift at lunch. He smiles and draws a tiny island on the first page. Tom feels proud because the gift was not expensive, but it was right. A good gift does not need to be big. It needs to fit the person.
After Max's birthday, Tom walks past the shop again. Now the window looks different to him. Before, he only saw many things. Now he thinks about people and what they might like. A cup can be right for one friend, and a notebook can be right for another.
The woman at the counter sees Tom outside and waves. Tom goes in to say hello. He tells her that Max liked the notebook. She smiles and says choosing a gift is a small way to listen to someone.
Tom remembers this sentence. At home, he looks at his own things: a soccer ball, a comic book, a blue pen, and a plant on the shelf. Each thing says something about him. Maybe gifts are little messages without many words.
The shop is still small, and Tom still does not have much money. But now he is not afraid to go inside. He knows he can ask a question, check a price, and choose slowly. That is enough for a good visit.
A week later, Tom starts saving coins in a small jar. He does not know what he will buy next, and that is fine. The jar is not only for shopping. It reminds him to think, wait, and choose with care. He also learns that asking the price is normal, not embarrassing or difficult.
