Nina had a red . It was soft and warm. Her grandmother made it for her, so Nina liked it very much. On Monday morning, Nina put on the scarf and walked to the small shop her house.
The street was quiet, but the wind was strong. Nina bought bread, milk, and two apples. When she came out of the shop, she saw a gray cat under a tree. She for a moment and smiled at the cat.
Then Nina touched her neck. The scarf was not there. She looked inside her bag. She looked on the ground. She looked near the shop door. The red scarf was gone.
Nina felt . She asked the , “Did you see my scarf?” The shopkeeper shook his head, but he helped her look. A woman at the bus stop said, “I saw something red near the park.”
Nina walked to the park. A boy was standing near the gate. He the red scarf in his hands. “Is this yours?” he asked. Nina was happy and said thank you. She gave the boy one apple.
At home, Nina told her grandmother the story. Her grandmother smiled. “A scarf keeps you warm,” she said, “but kind people make the day warmer.” Nina put the scarf on a chair, .
The next day, Nina wanted to say thank you again. She took a small paper bag and put two cookies inside. Then she walked back to the park after school. The boy was there with his bike. Nina gave him the cookies and asked his name. His name was Max, and he lived on the next street.
Max said he found the scarf on a bench. At first, he did not know what to do. He waited near the gate because he thought the owner might come back. Nina listened and felt lucky. She learned that a lost thing can travel through many hands before it comes home.
On Saturday, Nina and Max saw the gray cat again. The cat sat under the same tree and watched the people in the park. Nina laughed and said, “Maybe the cat saw everything first.” Max said the cat was the real detective. They both liked that idea.
After that week, Nina was more careful with her scarf. She still wore it every cold morning, but she checked it before she left a shop or a bus stop. She also looked for small ways to help other people, because one kind action had helped her.
On Sunday, Nina made a small rule for herself. Before she left any place, she would touch her neck and check her bag. The rule was simple, but it helped. She did not want to lose the scarf again.
Her grandmother also gave her a small name tag. Nina wrote her phone number on it and tied it to the scarf. “Now the scarf has a home address,” Grandmother said. Nina laughed because the scarf looked almost like a little pet.
In winter, Nina wore the scarf many times. Every time someone said, “What a nice red scarf,” she remembered the windy day, the shopkeeper, the woman at the bus stop, and Max near the park gate.
