Ravi was at Hill School. On his first day, the building looked very big. There were three , two staircases, and many blue doors. Ravi held his and tried to look brave.
His first class was science, but he walked to the music room . A girl named Emma saw him near the piano. “Are you looking for science?” she asked. Ravi nodded.
Emma walked with him to the right room. After class, she told two friends about Ravi. “This school is on the first week,” she said. “Let’s make him a .”
At lunch, the three students drew a simple map on the back of a paper bag. They the science room, the library, the gym, and the cafeteria. They also drew a star for Ravi’s locker.
Ravi laughed when he saw the map. It was not beautiful, but it was clear. He put it in his notebook and said, “Now I can .”
By Friday, Ravi did not need the map every hour. But he kept it. When another new student came in October, Ravi gave him a fresh map and said, “This helped me.”
The map helped Ravi more than he expected. It did not only show rooms. It also showed that someone cared. When he opened his notebook and saw the star near his locker, he remembered that he was not alone in the big building.
On Tuesday, Ravi used the map to find the cafeteria. On Wednesday, he used it to find the art room. By Thursday, he could walk from science to the library without looking down. Each small success made him feel less afraid.
Emma and her friends added one more thing to the map: a quiet corner near the window. They said it was a good place to read when the hallway was too loud. Ravi went there after lunch and finished his homework.
When the new student arrived in October, Ravi remembered his first week. He did not give a long speech. He just drew a clear map and marked the important places. Then he said, “Ask me if you get lost.”
Ravi also added his own notes to the map. Next to the library, he wrote “quiet.” Next to the cafeteria, he wrote “long line.” Next to the gym, he wrote “bring shoes.” The map became more useful every day.
His teacher saw the map and asked if she could copy it for other new students. Ravi felt shy, but he said yes. Emma smiled because their little lunch project had become something for the whole class.
At the end of the month, Ravi no longer felt like a visitor. He knew where to go, where to sit, and who to ask for help. The school was still big, but now it had friendly places inside it.
Ravi kept the first map in his desk at home. It was old and a little dirty now, but he did not throw it away. It reminded him that a simple drawing and a kind classmate can change a hard first week.
