A from a member of the public has led Greek underwater archaeologists to an ancient shipwreck off Andros. Its includes an estimated 600 to 650 clay transport jars, offering evidence of sea trade around 2,400 years ago. Greece's Ministry of Culture announced the discovery on July 31, 2026.
Divers from the ministry's Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities inspected the site, which lies between 39 and 44 metres below the surface. They found a concentrated cargo of amphoras, the large containers used to transport goods in the ancient Mediterranean. Many have pointed bases rather than flat bottoms.
The jars the late fifth or early fourth century BC. Archaeologists identified at least three types: examples associated with Mende, others linked to Peparethos, and a type known as Solokha 2. Peparethos is the ancient name of the island now called Skopelos.
The team one jar of each type for examination. This small sample can be studied more closely without bringing the entire cargo to the surface. The initial investigation also recorded part of an anchor made of lead and several stones that may have served as ballast, the weight used to help keep a ship stable.
The different containers could help researchers investigate the ship's . However, the places associated with its jars do not automatically reveal every port it visited. A container's origin is one clue; the journey of the vessel carrying it is another question.
Divernet reported that the cargo remained , but that does not mean divers found a complete wooden ship. The ministry has not reported surviving hull timbers. It has also not released the vessel's dimensions or the precise location of the site.
Those gaps matter when imagining the discovery. The evidence currently describes a large group of transport containers and a few other objects on the seabed, not an ancient ship ready to sail again. There is also no confirmed account of what caused it to sink.
Further research may the cargo's origins and the commercial connections of the late Classical period. For now, the most striking number is not a price attached to treasure. It is the hundreds of ordinary shipping jars that survived a journey their owners never completed.
