BYD sold 627,000 electric vehicles outside China in 2025, a year-on-year increase of 141.8 percent. That rapid moved the Chinese automaker into third place in the market and pushed Hyundai Motor Group down to fourth.
Hyundai and Kia recorded a combined 609,000 vehicles, up 11.8 percent. BYD therefore finished only 18,000 units ahead, but the result marked the first time it had beaten the Korean group in annual EV sales outside China. BYD’s reached 8.2 percent, compared with Hyundai Motor Group’s 7.9 percent.
Volkswagen remained first with 1.266 million vehicles, an increase of 60 percent. Tesla ranked second with 1.01 million, although its volume declined 10.7 percent. The figures cover battery-electric cars and plug-in hybrids registered in markets excluding China.
The wider market also recovered. Registrations outside China rose 26.6 percent to 7.662 million vehicles. Europe supplied more than half of that total, growing 34.9 percent to 4.257 million. Asia excluding China expanded 58.5 percent, while North America fell 5 percent after the end of US clean-vehicle tax credits.
Analysts linked BYD’s growth to price competitiveness, in-house battery production and a broader range of smaller cars and commercial vehicles. The company has also pursued through factories or planned plants in Hungary, Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia.
Producing vehicles closer to customers can reduce shipping costs and help an automaker respond to tariffs or local-content rules. It also supports , although building factories abroad requires capital, trained workers and reliable suppliers.
Hyundai Motor Group continued to grow, with the Ioniq 5 and Kia EV3 supporting sales. However, slower demand for models including the EV6, EV9 and Kona Electric limited its momentum. The group is relying partly on its Georgia plant to tariff risks in North America.
The ranking does not mean BYD dominates every region. Hyundai and Kia retain strong positions in North America, while BYD still depends heavily on China for its total business. Regulations, import duties and consumer preferences vary sharply between markets.
Even so, the 2025 result shows that Chinese manufacturers are becoming serious competitors beyond their home market. The next contest will involve more than headline volume. Companies must protect , adapt their and build local service networks while keeping prices attractive.
