DuckDuckGo has turned an ordinary pair of sunglasses into a protest against AI wearables. The privacy-focused company partnered with eyewear brand Knockaround to offer a limited-edition model for $35. The glasses quickly , giving a small marketing joke a much larger audience.
The product was promoted as “Normal F***ing Sunglasses.” Its technical list was deliberately unimpressive: no camera, no microphone, no artificial intelligence and no electronics. The frames did not require an app, a software update or charging. That was the entire point.
DuckDuckGo described the model as an answer to smart glasses that can photograph, film and analyse the world around their wearer. Such devices can be convenient for navigation, translation and hands-free recording. They have also caused privacy concerns. A may not know when a camera is active or where the resulting data will go.
The campaign used language to present normality as a breakthrough. It claimed that the sunglasses offered an “analog heads-up display” and worked with every operating system. Buyers were effectively paying for polarized sunglasses, DuckDuckGo branding and a public statement about privacy.
However, the product should not be confused with genuine anti-surveillance eyewear. Some specialist glasses use reflective materials or infrared-blocking lenses to interfere with facial-recognition systems. DuckDuckGo’s model contained no such technology. It protected the privacy of nearby people simply by having no recording equipment.
The stunt fits DuckDuckGo’s broader message that AI should be private and . The company offers AI-assisted search and chat, but users can turn those tools down or use a separate no-AI search experience. Its position is therefore not that all AI is unacceptable, but that people should be able to choose when it enters their lives.
Selling out does not reveal how many pairs were produced, so the result should not be treated as evidence of mass demand. Still, the response shows how against always-connected products can become a brand opportunity. DuckDuckGo sold ordinary sunglasses by making the absence of technology feel like the most unusual feature of all.
