Lily lived in a small blue house with her mother and her cat, Mimi. The house had a red door and a little . Every morning, Lily watered the flowers before school. She liked the garden because it was quiet, and Mimi liked to sleep under the roses.
One Saturday morning, Lily’s mother said, “I am going to the shop. Please stay near the house. I will be back soon.”
Lily nodded. “Okay, Mom.”
Her mother gave Lily a small silver . “If you go inside, the door. Keep the key in your .”
Lily put the key in her pocket and went to the garden. She played with Mimi, picked up dry leaves, and filled a bowl with water for the cat. Then she heard a sound near the street.
“Hello?” Lily called.
A little boy stood near the . He looked . “My ball went under your flowers,” he said. “Can you help me?”
Lily opened the gate and helped him the ball. They found it behind a big plant. The boy smiled. “Thank you! My name is Sam.”
“My name is Lily,” she said.
After Sam left, Lily wanted to go back inside. She put her hand in her pocket, but the key was not there. She checked the other pocket. Nothing. She looked on the ground. Nothing.
“Oh no,” Lily whispered. “I the key.”
She felt . The door was locked, and her mother was not home. Mimi sat near the door and looked at Lily as if she understood.
Lily tried to think. “Where did I go?” she asked herself. First, she looked near the roses. Then she looked near the bowl of water. After that, she looked near the gate. The key was not there.
Sam came back with his ball. “Are you okay?” he asked.
“I lost my key,” Lily said.
“I can help,” Sam said.
Together they walked slowly through the garden. Sam said, “Maybe it fell when we looked for my ball.” They moved the leaves behind the big plant. There, under one yellow leaf, was the small silver key.
Lily smiled. “You found it!”
“We found it,” Sam said.
Lily unlocked the door and put the key on the table. Then she and Sam sat on the step with Mimi between them. Lily’s mother came home and listened to the story.
“You did the right thing,” her mother said. “You stayed near the house, , and looked carefully.”
Lily looked at Sam. “Thank you for helping me.”
Sam smiled. “Thank you for helping me with my ball.”
The next afternoon, Sam came back to the gate. He did not lose his ball this time. He brought two cookies from his grandmother and gave one to Lily. They sat in the garden and watched Mimi chase a butterfly.
From that day, Lily always checked her pocket carefully. She also had a new friend on the street. Sometimes a lost key can help you find something better.
